The Ford Mustang was the original muscle car and is still going strong today. Ford’s venerable Mustang is the only muscle car to continuously be produced since its release. All of the others, even the Challenger and Camaro have had at least a few year’s hiatus during their long production runs. Even after all this time Ford somehow manages to keep things fresh, so, how does the new 2017 Mustang hold up?

Engines Galore

The 2017 Ford Mustang offers an extensive engine selection ranging from four bangers to a powerhouse of a V8. The basic engine is Ford’s 3.7L V6. You may be thinking, “But wait, what about the four cylinders?” Well, this is not like most other four cylinder engines. This is Ford’s 2.3L EcoBoost, which offers almost as much power as a naturally aspirated V8, but with much better mileage, weight, and emissions. It does this through Ford’s expertly engineered use of forced induction.

For those who do not know, forced induction, as opposed to natural aspiration, uses a blower system, in this case, a turbo charger, to force extra air into the cylinder. This results in higher compression and subsequently higher power. The downside to this system in traditional applications was that the engine was never designed for the increased induction. This has led to a lot of cracked blocks and blown engines from over-enthusiastic DIY mechanics. This is not an issue with Ford’s EcoBoost engines, however, since they were designed from the ground up to support the extra pressure.

Awesome Tech

Ford has come a long way over the past few years, choosing to evolve rather than accept a bailout, and now offers tech that would have seemed like a pipe dream ten years ago. First, the new Mustang is available with Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system which includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for streaming music from your phone.

The new Mustang also has adaptive cruise control. What makes this different from traditional cruise control is the use of sensors to detect other vehicles. This allows the car to adjust its speed automatically if you are approaching a slower vehicle.

While the new 2017 Mustang does not change much from the outgoing 2016 model year, it does offer a great engine selection and a modern entertainment system, so it is worth checking out next time you are browsing car dealerships near Mount Prospect.
