There are a wide variety of devices that people can purchase which are designed to secure their premises, the most important ant are home security locks. The locks, which are installed on all the exterior doors of the home, are designed to keep intruders at bay. Home security locks can be anything from a simple mechanical lock which is locked and opened with Ilco key blanks to the most sophisticated electronic locks, all of which can provide the homeowner with a number of security options.

The most basic lock is one which requires a key to open and close. A simple cylindrical lockset can be fitted into a hole which is bored in the door; it perhaps is the most common mechanical lock. A mortise lock is more secure as it is installed in a pocket which is fitted in the edge of the door. Mortise locks offer greater security although they are more expensive than the basic cylindrical model. Regardless of whether the lock is cylindrical or mortise, they both operate with an Ilco key blank combined with a knob, lever or handle.

A mechanical lock, although providing some degree of security are often used in conjunction with a dead bolt. A deadbolt is mounted above the lockset and consists of a longer and harder bolt that engages well into the door jamb. This arrangement makes it more difficult to break in than just relying on a cylinder lock. A deadbolt is activated from the inside with a thumb screw actuated lever and from the outside, is opened with a key. In many cases the deadbolt and the lock are keyed in such a way that one common key opens both. Although there are double keyed lock bolts which require a key for both the outside and the inside, these are banned by some local codes as they make escaping the house in the event of a fire very time consuming and potentially hazardous.

More sophisticated locks do not require an Ilco key blank, they are operated via an electrical signal which either engages or releases the bolt. The signal is activated when the homeowner enters a security code or perhaps swipes a security card which activates the locking mechanism.
