When people visit a salon to get their hair colored, or even undergo this process using a home kit, they’re hoping for the end result to include great-looking hair. However, this isn’t always the outcome. It could turn out that the new color is way too light, way too dark, green, brassy or orange-colored. The only way to fix this — other than a drastic haircut — is a salon color correction, which can be quite time-consuming and expensive.

Basically, salons usually consider anything that takes colored hair at least two shades lighter or darker a Color Correction. This type of correction involves more than just a quick new dye job. Each time hair is processed, it can damage the hair and remove proteins from the hair along with the original color. Thus, it has to be carefully treated to avoid damaging it even more. The process may require a number of different treatments that need to be spread over multiple visits. Without doing the Color Correction properly, the end result could end up looking muddy or even green. When going a number of shades lighter, it isn’t always possible to just use a lifting color solution. Bleaching may be necessary, and this can be a lot more damaging to the hair, especially if it’s already been processed.

Before having a color correction, it’s a good idea to arrange a consultation with a stylist. Bring pictures of what you would like the hair to look like, as well as a list of all of the various treatments and products that have been used on the hair. All of this information is necessary to determine exactly what needs to be done to fix the bad dye job. Because the process can take anything from a couple hours to most of the day, this type of consultation is important when trying to schedule the correction. Otherwise, the stylist might find out at the last minute that it will take longer and have to try to reschedule other clients, which they don’t appreciate having to do.
