If you need to fool the finicky striped bass, you’re in the right place. At Delta Fishing Charters, we love sharing our tips and tricks from our Delta striper fishing guide professionals. Here are five ways to make your day of striper fishing more successful.

Retrieve the Lure Faster

One thing that new striper fishers don’t realize is that retrieving speed is crucial for catching the striper. An increased speed triggers this fish to strike, without look at the bait too closely. If they have time to inspect it or think about it, they will be moving on. You have to activate their predatory instincts fast before they can override it.

Use White Water to Your Advantage

Stripers can be finicky in clear water because they can see the bait better, so they can inspect it better. White water makes it harder for you to see, but also makes it harder for them to see as well. If you can use a lure that rides high in white water, you’ll have better luck catching this fish.

Try Lures of Different Colors

Some stripers are more likely to respond to different colors and patterns when it comes to bait. High visibility patterns work well in cloudy water, where the fish are more likely to be intrigued by the colors. However, in clear water, natural colors and patterns work better to mimic the look of real fish.

Try Night Fishing

When darkness falls, it’s harder for the fish to resist a tasty looking snack. By now, they are hungry, and looking to fill up on anything that looks good for the day. If you’ve had a day of nips, stick around after dark to start seeing some strikes.

Use Live Bait

Sometimes strikers are just not going to respond to artificial lures no matter what you do. In this case, it pays to use real baitfish, bloodworms, or clams to attract their attention. However, if you are against this practice, try using a lure with a tease. That little wisp of feather could be just what the striper needs to make them want to take a bite.
