When it comes to buying heavy trucks for sale, having someone with you if this is a first purchase is important. Choose an experienced driver with some mechanical knowledge, or bring your heavy equipment mechanic with you.

The best possible option is to work with a dealer you trust and with a top reputation. This will allow you to talk about your needs, compare new and used trucks on the lot, and then make the right decision for the company.

Regardless of where you are, taking the time to check out the truck for yourself will be important. This is not a decision that should be rushed as the heavy trucks for sale you are looking at will be a long term investment.

Check the Cab

While the condition of the cab has nothing to do with the mechanical aspects of the truck, it does provide insight into how the truck was used. A dirty cab that is well worn and obviously has been used and abused is an indicator of the level of driver care when operating the vehicle.
A well-maintained cab with normal wear based on age also sends a message. A person that cared for the cab most likely also maintained the engine and other systems in the truck, which is a positive sign.

Check the Frame

Watch very carefully if a used heavy trucks for sale has recently been painted. Paint can be used to hide a multitude of problems including rust and repairs. Get under the vehicle and look at the frame under the cab as well as the rest of the chassis. Look for signs of rust, Bondo and other signs of welding and repairs.

Check the Systems

The two most important systems to check, in addition to the engine, will be the hydraulics and the brakes. Additionally, check the air conditioning and refrigeration systems on heavy trucks for sale equipped with these options.

You may need to have a specialist, such as your mechanic or an experienced driver, take at least a quick look at these systems. With a new vehicle this isn’t a concern as these will be under full warranty.

Review Service and Maintenance Logs

For used vehicles, having the opportunity to review the service and maintenance logs for the trucks will be critical. While not having the records available may not be a complete deal breaker, it should be at least a red flag.

If you are buying a used heavy truck or a new truck, your best option is always to work with a dealer. Talk about what you want and need, and be clear on your budget, and you will find the truck for your fleet.
