If you’re dieting, or simply just like to watch what you eat, but also enjoy a good hearty meal consisting of Mexican food, there are ways you can indulge without going completely overboard. The general richness of Mexican Food Las Vegas can make this somewhat difficult, but when consumed carefully and in moderation, there is no reason you cannot periodically enjoy your favorite Mexican foods.
Eating healthy Mexican food can start before you even arrive at the restaurant. Most good Mexican restaurants have websites, and you can check those sites to see if it has nutritional information available. Some will and some won’t, but if your restaurant of choice doesn’t, don’t worry. Using a bit of common sense can go a long way. When you first arrive, you’ll probably be offered a basket of tortilla chips to tide you over until your main meal arrives. Eat only a reasonable portion of these—not the entire basket—and consider using salsa or chili for dipping instead of melted cheese. Guacamole is another option to consider as it’s extremely healthy for you, but the downside is that it also contains a substantial amount of fat. By using salsa you are consuming nothing but vegetable matter, so this choice makes the most sense from a dieting standpoint.
For your main meal, consider grilled items over fried ones. Fajitas work well for this, as they are entirely grilled and can be had without cheese added to them, though you’ll likely have to request that they not use it. Chicken, particularly grilled, as part of the filler for your fajita is a great choice as it’s generally low fat and high protein. Consider asking for vegetable additions to your fajita as well as a healthy added filler. If you like having a side order of beans, consider black beans over refried beans, since refried beans tend to be made with either bacon grease or lard, both of which are extremely unhealthy. Black beans are considered a much healthier bean choice, and contain “good” carbohydrates, the type that generally won’t expand your waistline. Rice can also be considered as a side, though you may want to ask if it’s authentic Spanish rice or simply processed white rice with seasonings added. Avoid white rice where possible.
Watch out for dessert, even though you may be tempted. Fried ice cream is a highly popular Mexican food dessert, but it’s both fried and ice cream. The name alone should tip you off that it’s probably not very healthy.
It’s definitely possible to eat well and still enjoy an excellent Mexican food meal if you plan carefully and avoid the worst of the temptations that may come your way.
