Whether you’ve lived in a dorm while in college or you’re a new student venturing away from home for the first time, living off campus is an option to consider. There are some ways that you can make any kind of transition to this new living situation a little easier.
Living With Someone
One way to decrease the amount of money that you might have to spend each month for off-campus housing at UAB is to find a roommate. This could be a friend who might not go to school with you, someone who is in one of your classes, or even someone you don’t know who is looking for someone to share expenses with as well. Make sure you screen each person before moving in together to ensure that the situation will work and that you’re compatible with each other. You want to try to make a list of chores and what each person should pay for as well as a list of rules for each person to follow.
Lease
Before signing a lease for off-campus housing at UAB, carefully look over all of the details of the lease. You should understand what is expected of you while living in the home, any additional fees that you might have for pets, and what you would need to do if you terminate the lease prematurely. Consider making a checklist of the home before moving in so that you can compare any issues when you do move out.
