The nose, aside from the ears, is the most common and popular area that people have piercings on. Historically nostril and nose piercing is more associated with tribes and people of South Asia, such as the Nepalese and the Indians. However, there are African cultures and tribes that use bones through the nose a mark of tradition and passage. In those days infections were uncommon and when they did occur they were treated naturally with herbal remedies. Nowadays there is a higher risk of infection of open wounds such as piercings because of the nature of our society and the pollution in the atmosphere.
Types of Piercings
Most people are familiar with pierced ears, both in the lobes and the cartilage areas. However, there are also many other seen and unseen piercings that people are now fascinated by and eager to have done. For example, eyebrow piercing is now a more common procedure than it used to be. The concept bean during the late 1970’s when the Punk generation wore safety pins through various parts of the faces, from eyebrows and ears to noses and lips. During that era of music and outrageous fashion, people wore all manner of strange and scary items on their bodies. Since then, even though piercing has become a little more refined, people are still willing to put holes through the most odd parts of their bodies, including their nipples and nether regions.
Nose Piercing
Different parts of the nose can be pierced, including the bridge, the septum and the nostrils. A nose bridge piercing is a small bar that goes through a pierced ‘tunnel’ through the top of the bridge of the nose. If you feel there with your thumb and forefinger you will note the slight pull of a fleshy part when you pinch it. That is the part which gets pierced and the bar put through. Another piercing which is growing in popularity is the septum piercing. This is commonly known as a bull ring piercing because of its resemblance to a ring put through the nose of a bull. The septum is a small piece of cartilage between the two nostrils inside the nose cavity and the piercing usually consists of a ‘C’ shaped barbell with a screw-on ball to hold it in place.
