For fabricators, manufacturers and building and bridge contractors, having the right equipment for the job is critical. Not every application that requires a stud welding machine will benefit from the use of the same equipment. Knowing the differences and what your company needs for this job as well as future jobs will always be a central factor.
When looking for a stud welding machine, you should know if you need a CD (Capacitor Discharge) or a Drawn Arc welder. There is some overlap, but as a general guideline CD machines are for smaller diameter weld studs and thinner base metal. The drawn arc process is ideal for larger jobs where the quality of the weld is critical with larger diameter weld studs.
Your Needs
It is a good idea to jot down notes on the types of projects, the metals and the specifics of your jobs that would impact the use of the welding machine. Make a list of the applications and work that is standard for your business as well as any work you are considering taking on in the future that is different in its needs for stud welding.
Think about the location of use as well. Do you need something that is lightweight and portable or will be used exclusively in your shop? Do you have highly skilled welders or do you require equipment that is easy to use and requires minimal training?
If you currently have a stud welding machine, make a note of what you like and what you don’t like or would like to change about the system. This can be very helpful in narrowing down choices for a new welder.
Talk to the Manufacturers
Do some online research and find three or so quality, reputable manufacturers. Then have a phone conversation and discuss the needs you have previously identified. Ask for suggestions as to the models and options in equipment they recommend. Finally, compare features and prices between the manufacturers, just make sure you are comparing similar machines with regards to features and capacity to choose your new or replacement welding machine.
