Dentists Mississauga and Tooth Sensitivity

A common, and also very annoying problem, is dental sensitivity. Fortunately, Dentists Cinco Ranch have a treatment for this issue. Unlike major oral problems, dental sensitivity usually is the cause of something simple, like a cavity or gum recession. However, the only way to know what the exact problem is will be to schedule a consultation visit.

Not all types of dental sensitivity are equal. Dentists distinguish from two types of dental sensitivity, which originate in punctually produced and chronically.

  • Acute tooth sensitivity
  • : As a standard, all have experienced cold sensations in the teeth when we eat ice cream. That feeling disappears in seconds. Acute sensitivity problems are the same way.
  • Chronic tooth sensitivity
  • : This type of sensitivity occurs constantly. It is a pain that can be felt even when drinking a glass of water at room temperature.

Pathology in patients with periodontal symptoms is usually presented with chronic tooth sensitivity. With the loss of bone and gum, these patients usually have roots in contact with the exterior of the tooth. This means that the dental nerve is unprotected and is very prone to stimuli. Sensitivity in these patients are extremely high.

Products indicated for the treatment of tooth sensitivity, like toothpastes and mouthwashes, are required in chronic cases. These products insulate the outer rib filling of the pores of the dental roots and dentin structure (structure located below the tooth enamel). Your dentist may write you a prescription for these types of products or may defer to performing oral surgery to repair the issue. Nonetheless, a dental consultation is needed.

  • If the source is due to recessions in the gum (due to overwhelming brushing), dentists advise that you reduce the pressure (not the frequency) in brushing. They ask that you use brushes with soft, high quality bristles and use mouthwash and desensitizing gels.
  • In some cases, gingival recessions are caused by the presence of a bad severe occlusion, occurring late in gum recession. This recession will leave part of the root exposed and the sensitivity displayed.
  • In people who have had periodontal disease, the sensitivity is more complicated than one would think. In severe cases, home therapy with gels and mouthwashes, plus clinical therapy with a very high concentration of fluorine will help reduce the most of this sensitivity.
