The strain of cannabis plant known as the hemp plant is a valuable resource that can be used in many different aspects. Hemp is known as one of the fastest growing crops and can be very lucrative based on its yield alone. It’s also loved by farmers because of its resiliency and ability to grow a dense crop and drown out weeds. It is very resistant to pets and grows in a variety of climates and soils.

Commercial Uses

Hemp in Washington is the ground floor opportunity for many other businesses to evolve. Historically the hemp plant can be used for things such as food, clothing, biodegradable plastic, paper, construction materials, biofuel, body oil/ lotions, oil-based products, animal feed, insulation, and paint. From the beginning of our country hemp crops were mandatory until the passing of legislation in 1937 which prohibited the growth of hemp.

Medical Uses

The medical field has found hemp to be beneficial for conditions such as high cholesterol, skin disease, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer’s. It has also been found to protect against certain conditions such as cancer, heart attack, and coronary artery disease. Hemp oil has been shown to contain vitamins A, C, D, beta-carotene, and minerals such as sulfur, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium.

Modern Uses

With these findings, the legislation preventing the growth of hemp is slowly being overturned. Many people are seeking out hemp products on their own for many different uses. Some of these uses include better sleep, improved mood, and decreased anxiety, decreased stress, easing of joint discomfort, promote heart health, fight free radicals, and for exercise recovery. Hemp products are often used for healing following surgery, injury, or any issue involving temporary inflammation. Many skin care products are now found with hemp oil for its anti-aging benefits. Overall the side effects of hemp are minimal in comparison with its benefits. This gives us cause to believe hemp needs to make a come back in the 21st century. Hopefully to replace many commercial products with ingredients that are harsher to the environment and our bodies. Business of hemp in Washington will hopefully influence the medical community to supply us with medicines with fewer side effects.
