The Importance of Holocaust Remembrance Day in the United States

by | Jul 25, 2023 | Education

In January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau still held many prisoners. Over six million Jewish victims perished there. It is why various bodies and councils introduced Holocaust Remembrance Day. Several European states made this decision in 2002, choosing January 27, when Auschwitz was liberated, as Holocaust Day. This day varies between countries depending on their historical experience. The United Nations also proclaimed January 27, Auschwitz’s liberation anniversary, International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Various nations help teachers with Holocaust Day preparations by supplying teaching material to raise students’ awareness of genocides and crimes against humanity. This promotes tolerance, understanding, and friendship between races, religions, and nations.

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Day

The 2023 Holocaust ceremony in the U.S. was held in Washington, D.C. Holocaust survivors shared their stories, and candle-lighting ceremonies honored the victims. In the U.S., this remembrance aligns with a solemn national holiday in Israel, Yom HaShoah. This holiday is on the 27th day of the first month of the ecclesiastical year. This date coincides with the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising commemoration on April 19. It was when 700 Jewish rebels resisted German police and troops who entered the largest Jewish ghetto in German-occupied Europe to evict Jewish inhabitants. This Jewish revolt was the first major urban protest against Hitler’s Nazi Germany. It was eliminated four weeks later.

Various foundations and organizations aim to ensure that people never forget the Holocaust tragedies. To preserve the Holocaust memory, Zachorfoundation.org provides educational programs, online resources, and outreach to the community.
