There are three types of aluminum tube that is most commonly used in the manufacture of everything from auto parts to furniture and architectural products to athletic equipment. The tubing includes square, rectangle and round. There are not as many size choices in rectangle and square as there are of round tube. Each one is used for different purposes and is available in different sizes as well as thicknesses.
Aluminum Rectangle Tube
Rectangular tubes are available in 1/2 inch and go up to as large as eight inches per side and in thicknesses from 1/8 inch to 1/2 inch. Alloys used are usually ranging from 6061 and 6063. The easiest to weld, machine and cut is 6063 rectangular tubing. That is why it is preferred for things such as trim and frames. 6061 rectangular tubes are very often used to form structural components and where corrosion resistance and lightweight materials are required. Aluminum rectangle tube is most commonly used for:
* Trim as well as frames
* Furniture
* Structures such as decks
* Gear and equipment for sports
* Fences and columns used for support
Aluminum Square Tube
Square tubes are equal on all sides and come in thicknesses from 1/8 inch for smaller tubes to ½ inch as with aluminum rectangle tube. Alloys used range from 6061 to 6063. There is less strength with 6063 alloy and therefore it is used for more narrow widths. Despite this it tends to be more resistant to issues related to corrosion and also has a better finish than 6061 alloys. They are popular for structural applications especially those that need a lighter weight of material. Aluminum square tube is most commonly used for:
* Frames
* Racks
* Shelves
Aluminum Round Tube
Round aluminum tubes come in a far broader range of sizes from 5/8 inch to 16 inches. The range of thicknesses is therefore broader as well from 1/16 inch to 1 inch. Because there is a broader range of sizes there are more varied alloys used. The most common tend to be 6061-T6. This is because it is stronger and tougher. It also has a nicer finish and excellent corrosion resistance. This makes it well suited to atmosphere and sea water exposure. Round tube is also very weldable, joinable and machinable. Aluminum round tube is most commonly used for Aircraft, Marine and Automotive applications.
