Channel is a very important material that is used in construction, fabrication and manufacturing. The basic shape of channels varies, but it all features two upright sides with a base and an open top. Think of it as a square or a rectangular shape with the top cut off to leave just three sides in place.
There is also slide track channel, which can be called C-channel. With these sizes and options in aluminum channels, only the center of the top piece is removed, so the channel looks like a squared off C that is turned on its back.
Finally, there is hat channel, also known as furring channel. This is different from C-channel in that the top of the sides flares out to create a flange. This flange is attached to a wall, joist or ceiling with sheetrock or paneling, then attached to the raised part of the channel.
Construction
The most common use of C styles of aluminum channels is in construction. This can include building walls or for use in building frames for equipment or for vehicles. Boats, trailers, campers, RVs all feature this type of aluminum. It is very practical because of the strength, the lightweight nature of the alloy and the resistance to corrosion.
It is also a better option than many of the other metals because it is easy to work with. Aluminum suppliers will even drill, punch and miter pieces to order, allowing fabricators, manufacturers and builders to simply complete the assembly.
