If you are diabetic and suffering from foot pain you are experiencing diabetic neuropathy, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist immediately. This condition is generally caused by nerve damage and/or poor circulation in the feet.
Poor Circulation
There are many causes for poor circulation in diabetics:
-
High blood sugar
-
Smoking
-
High blood pressure
-
Increased fat levels
Any of these can cause your arteries to harden, causing pain in your feet. As a diabetic, you need to be aware of constant cold feet, pain in your legs when walking, or if foot pain wakes you while sleeping.
Nerve Damage
Nerve damage can be potentially fatal to a diabetic. Your nerves are what signals pain in your brain. You might not realize that you have a foot injury.
Even something as simple as a blister or a minor cut can lead to an ulcer, which is why it is vital that you inspect your feet daily. If left untreated, an ulcer can lead to gangrene which can lead to amputation. If your feet feel like they are burning, numb, or tingling, see a podiatrist to get recommendations for proper foot care.
Preventative Foot Care
Wash your feet daily with warm water and dry them completely. It is important to always check your blood sugar level and keep your toenails trimmed.
Don’t ignore feet injuries. If one becomes inflamed or does not heal within two or three days, see a podiatrist. At West Haven Foot and Ankle Center, they provide treatment programs designed specifically for diabetics.
