Why An In-Home Survey Is So Important For Charlotte, NC Local Movers

by | Feb 6, 2016 | Moving

For many people, the term local mover is a bit confusing. However, if you stop and think of local movers as anything in Charlotte, NC or within the state, you have a general guideline of the term.

Most moving companies will call intrastate relocation local moves while anything out of state, or interstate, will be considered long distance. There are also some companies that may set a range or mileage limit to distinguish the two, but it is important to remember that a company crossing a border with another state needs to have an interstate license, even if the move is not a long distance.

All top local movers will want to get an idea of how to plan and structure the move, the size of truck needed, the supplies required, and the number of movers to send to complete the move on the desired schedule. To get this information, the company will send a representative to complete what is known as an in-home or in-house survey.

What Happens

When you call into local movers, they will schedule, at your convenience, the in-home survey. This will typically last about 30 minutes to an hour depending on the size of the home and the number of items you need to have moved over and above the contents of the home.

You will usually be asked questions by the representative including the move location, the time frame you are considering, and about specific items. You can also ask the representative questions, and this is important to find out about the local movers.

Look for local movers offering free, no-obligation quotes. This is a great way to compare companies and to also get a good impression on what you can expect from the various companies under consideration.

The Estimate or Quote

At the end of the in-home survey, or shortly after, the local movers will then provide a binding or not-to-exceed binding estimate or quote. This allows you to see the price the moving company is willing to complete the move for including all services you request at the time of the quote.

The not-to-exceed quote gives you the maximum amount the local movers will charge. If your Charlotte, NC move is actually a lower weight than the estimate, you will pay the lower of the two totals, which is something to consider if you are still determining if some items will be moved or left behind.
